Make This Christmas Special By Helping Needy Children
Christmas is a special time of year for many children, even if they don’t happen to be Christians. It may have started out as a celebration of the birth of Jesus, but over time, it is the message of Jesus that has become more important, that of sharing and giving. However, this fundamental message sometimes gets lost in the hustle and bustle of the holidays, and needy children feel it the most. You can make this Christmas special for other people as well as yourself when you remember about the children. Here are some ways you can do it.
Make a list
It will not do to go off at half cock. Just like any project, you need to know your target audience. Start with the people you know. Do you know someone with children who may be having money problems? Earmark them for your first round of Christmas gifts. Go to your local community center and talk to the people there. They are the most likely to know the children who would benefit from a little Christmas cheer. Get a list of names so that you can personalize your gifts.
Check it twice
Many other children outside your own immediate circle may need a little help. If you are thinking of making a cash donation, think about all the established charities in your community that cater to children. Do you have the Salvation Army in your area? There may be a local Make a Wish foundation. Your local place of worship may have a Christmas fund that you can support. Ask the local schools if they have a drive scheduled before the holidays. Most of these organizations will have an online presence, so you will not even have to leave your house to find out. Go online and find out what you can do to help.
Naughty or nice
You may not think about it much, but children with one or both parents in prison are probably finding it the hardest to join in on the festivities. It is not right that they should suffer for the sins of their parents, but they do, nonetheless. Find an organization similar to Angel Tree that caters to the needs of children of prisoners. If there isn’t one in your area, get together a group of people you know to pool your resources and send it to the families.
Go to town
If you want to make Christmas truly special, you should think beyond cash donations, which you can do at any time of the year. Make an effort to put together Christmas baskets of canned goods, clothes, toys, and other goodies that you can wrap up in true Christmas fashion. A gaily wrapped package can do wonders to boost the spirits of any child, especially those who are needy.
Children are resilient. They can weather storms that will leave most adults devastated. However, you can help them more than you know by giving them a little attention and love this Christmas. It does not take much to make a child happy for a little while, and it can change their lives for the better.
